Casey Ashley makes hard charge with day's big bag |
|
Ashley made the biggest upward move of the day moving from 15th to second with a Sunday five-fish limit of 19-11, which was the Sunday's heaviest bag. He was using two different sized jerk baits and a jig throughout the event. It paid off for Ashley, who fell short of capturing his second Bassmaster Elite Series title.
The third-year Elite angler was fishing a variety of edges and bluffs in 6 to 12 feet of water. He was able to get a limit by 8:30 a.m. CT Sunday. Complete Story |

Ashley would have needed the mother of all bags to pass Biffle today, so he effectively fished for 2nd. Thus in his mind, Ashley achieved all he could today.
"I feel great," he said. "I would have needed 24 pounds to pass Tommy, so I feel real good about what happened today. I've never done well on Alabama lakes, so this is a pretty big deal for me."
Ashley had a stretch of jerkbait water that accounted for all of his day-1 weigh-fish. During the day-2 cancellation the area muddied significantly, so he needed to use a jig there yesterday when competition resumed. The water had cleared enough overnight, however, that the jerkbait was back on today. Complete Story |

Casey Ashley said his biggest regret about the tournament was his misjudgment of the Pool-4 area that was fished by Snowden and Fralick. He said it was the first place he set his boat down when official practice started 9 days ago.
"I thought there was a lot of fish there, but not big ones, and the best I could catch there would be 10 pounds," he said. "I was going to catch a limit real fast and get out. It turned out that there were big ones in there."
He said he made one pass through that area with a spinnerbait today, and then left it to the others. He started pitching a jig to woody targets and caught a decent limit in the afternoon. Read More

As noted, Ashley caught fish near Fralick and Snowden today. "Today I saw just how big a mistake I made yesterday," Ashley said. "It was actually the first place I stopped the first day of practice. I thought when I went in there (in practice) that the best I could do was 10 to 12 pounds. After what happened there yesterday (he was frustrated fishing behind people) I went in there to catch me a quick five.
"The first one was a 2-pounder, the next a 5 1/2, the next a 4, the next a 4 1/2. I had 18 or 19 pounds by 10:00. It feels good, especially after a day like yesterday. Going out this morning I knew I needed to catch a big sack to be in contention. It feels good when a plan comes together. It doesn't always happen like that." Read More |
